Mini electric makeup brush cleaner

How to Clean Makeup Brushes (and How Often You Should)

Makeup brushes collect product, oil and dust every time you use them. Dirty brushes apply makeup unevenly, and many skincare experts link them to breakouts. Regular cleaning keeps your brushes and your skin in better shape.

How often should you clean makeup brushes?

Brush How often
Foundation and concealer Weekly
Powder, blush and bronzer Every 2 weeks
Eye brushes Weekly
Beauty sponges After every use if possible

Method 1: by hand

  1. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water, pointing them downward.
  2. Add a drop of gentle shampoo or brush cleanser.
  3. Swirl on your palm or a cleaning mat until the water runs clear.
  4. Squeeze out the water and reshape the bristles.
  5. Lay flat or hang bristles-down to dry. Never dry them upright; water can loosen the glue.

Method 2: an electric brush cleaner

An electric cleaner spins the brush in cleanser and then spins it nearly dry in seconds. It's much faster if you own a lot of brushes. The Mini Makeup Brush Cleaner is 79 AED.

Brush care tips

  • Don't soak the whole brush. Water in the handle weakens the glue.
  • Store brushes upright in a cup once dry.
  • Replace brushes that shed a lot or lose their shape.
  • Keep a separate pouch for travel. A Portable Cosmetic Bag (49 AED) keeps them clean on the go.
