A fresh coat of paint transforms a room, and doing it yourself saves a lot compared with hiring painters. With the right preparation and tools, it's a very achievable weekend project.
Before you start
- Renting? Check your tenancy contract and get your landlord's permission. Many require walls to be returned to the original colour when you move out.
- Villa or community rules: some communities restrict exterior colours. Check before painting outside walls, gates or fences.
What you'll need
- Interior paint and primer if covering a dark colour
- Masking tape and drop sheets
- Filler and sandpaper for small holes
- A roller and brushes, or a paint sprayer
Step by step
- Clear and cover: move furniture to the middle and cover it and the floor.
- Prep the walls: fill holes, sand smooth, and wipe off dust.
- Tape edges: skirting boards, switches and window frames.
- Cut in: paint corners and edges with a brush.
- Paint the walls: use a roller or sprayer in even coats.
- Second coat: once the first is dry.
- Remove tape before the last coat fully hardens for clean lines.
Roller or paint sprayer?
A roller is simple and great for single walls. A sprayer is much faster for large areas, fences, gates and furniture, and gives a smooth finish. It needs more masking because spray travels. The Cordless Electric Paint Spray Gun is 180 AED, and being cordless, it's easy to use outdoors.
Safety
- Keep windows open and the AC on for ventilation.
- Wear a mask and goggles when spraying.
- Paint during cooler hours if working outdoors.
