Camping season is coming back to the UAE. From October to March, families head out to the desert in Al Qudra, Liwa, Fossil Rock and Jebel Jais, or drive long weekends to Oman. Sleeping in the car is often the easiest option: there is no tent to set up, it keeps the sand and wind out, and you can leave whenever you want. The hard part is getting comfortable on a back seat. That is what a car air mattress is for.
What is a car air mattress?
A car air mattress is an inflatable bed shaped to sit on your car's back seat. It fills the gap between the seat and the front seats, so you get a flat, cushioned surface to lie on. When you are done, you let the air out, fold it and store it in the boot.
Why UAE drivers use one
- Desert camping: sleep in the car at Al Qudra or Liwa without setting up a tent.
- Long drives: a proper rest stop on the drive to Oman, Saudi Arabia or between emirates.
- Kids on road trips: children can lie down and nap on longer journeys, while the car is parked.
- Waiting time: rest in the car during long waits, beach days or airport pick-ups.
What to look for when you buy
- Fit: it should cover the full back seat of a sedan or SUV.
- Thick, strong material: it needs to handle heat and repeated use.
- Fast inflation: an electric pump that plugs into the car's socket saves a lot of effort.
- Small when packed: it should fold small enough to keep in the boot all season.
Tips for sleeping in your car in the desert
- Open the windows slightly for fresh air. Never sleep with the engine running.
- Desert nights get cold in winter, so bring a blanket.
- Park on firm ground, away from tracks used by other vehicles.
- Take the mattress out of a hot car in summer, so the heat does not damage it.
